MAPS : 1931 - 1st Visit to the West

 

29th August - 1st January, 1932

 

A brief synopsis of the trip to the West.

 

The maps are in order of travel from one location to another, starting from Bombay , India on the SS Rajputana sailing to Aden on the Arabian Peninsula, then through the Red Sea, then navigating the Suez Canal to Port Said, Egypt. 

The ship then journeyed towards the Strait of Messina, Italy across to the Strait of Bonifacio which separates Sardinia and Corsica, then onto Marseilles, France.

 

Once Meher Baba landed in France he took the train to Paris then to Boulogne where he took a ferry to Folkestone, England, then train to London. After a short stay he travelled by car to the West of England to East Challacombe in Devon. 

After a stay, he motored back to London and later he took the train to Dover, and ferried across to Calais, France, continuing the rail journey by the Simplon Orient Express train to Paris, then Dijon, Lausanne, Switzerland, through the Simplon Tunnel to Milan, Italy followed by Venice and Trieste, crossing into Yugoslavia onto Bulgaria and finally to Istanbul, Turkey.

 

After a stay, he returned by the Simplon Orient Express train to Milan, then motored to Genoa where he took a ship to Naples then sailed to Gibraltar, and the Azores Islands finally reaching New York City, U.S.A. He stayed in the country for about a month. During this time he motored to Harmon-on-Hudson, then to Hancock, N.H., proceeded to Boston, where he took a ship back to New York. 

He again motored to Harmon for another 10 days, before taking a ship to Cherbourg, France, then train to Paris, and Marseilles. He departed by ship to Bombay, India, the same way he first left over 3 months earlier.
