IN MEMORY :
Loren (Tex) Hightower was born in 1927. Tex was an American dancer who split his performing career between ballet and musical theatre along with appearances in early television shows.Originally from Texas, Hightower began his studies with Ted Shawn at Jacob's Pillow in 1947, and it was there that he formed a lifelong association with the renowned ballet master Margaret Craske.
Tex, as he was known from the first day he set foot at Jacob's Pillow, danced principal roles with the Metropolitan Opera Ballet in the early 1950s, both in New York City and on tour. With the Met, he had the good fortune on many occasions to partner Janet Collins, the first African American Prima Ballerina.Tex also enjoyed a long association with Agnes De Mille, dancing in Oklahoma! and with the Agnes De Mille Dance Theatre. Like many ballet dancers of the 1940’s and 1950’s, Hightower frequently supplemented his income by working in musical theatre, and his extensive Broadway appearances include Peter Pan, 110 in the Shade, Camelot, Anyone Can Whistle, Brigadoon, Half A Sixpence, Finian’sRainbow, Goldilocks, Livin' the Life, and Buttrio Square. He retired from performing in the late 1960’s and for many years taught dance at Adelphi University and alongside Margaret Craske in Manhattan."
A highlight in Loren’s career as a dancer was dancing in Herbert Ross’ noteworthy and controversial ballet The Maids (an adaptation of the Jean Genet play), with his life partner of 44 years, Paul Olson. Both Hightower and Olson were in the ballet's 1957 premiere produced by Ballet Theatre, and Hightower later restaged the work for ABT.
Hightower's credits as a choreographer include the ballets An Idyll for Aphrodite and Chips from a Crystal Ballroom.
As a follower of Indian spiritual master, Meher Baba, Tex has traveled the world sharing his first hand experiences of Meher Baba with other Baba lovers and people who are hearing of Meher Baba for the first time.
In 2013 Loren moved from New York City to Myrtle Beach, to be closer to the Meher Spiritual Center, Meher Baba's home in the West.
